From my initial call to Solar Edge Protection to the job being completed, everything was carried out efficiently & professionally. The boys did a great job and tidied any mess up too. I'd had a really bad pigeon squatting problem under my panels but this was taken care of and my panels were cleaned, gutters and slates were cleared too. Problem solved and the roof looks great, no longer ashamed to look at it. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this company. Thank you.Posted on Trustindex![]()

Top quality solar panel maintenance We were very impressed with the efficiency and professionalism of the team from Solar Edge. Tommy and his colleagues replaced the defective bird-proofing on our solar panels, and cleared out the pigeon nest debris from underneath. At every stage they were happy to explain what they were doing, and they completed the work in about an hour. We would be very happy to use them again - though of course we don't expect to need to for a few years!Posted on Trustindex![]()

From contacting the office to finished job is flawless thanks and well done !
Solar panels are a great investment that every homeowner should consider. Given the constant rise in energy prices in this day and age, solar PV is becoming even more useful with helping prioritise environmentally friendly products. Solar panels transform solar energy into heat energy and electricity, which can be used in both commercial and residential establishments.
Just like any other energy producing device, solar panel components are also prone to damages. Fortunately, it is easy to maintain and recognise faulty components of solar panels as they will affect how they perform.
The good news is that solar panel repairs can help resolve most of the common issues that may be affecting solar panels, as long as the repairs are done by solar engineers.
In this article, we are going to discuss some of the common solar panel faults and some of the maintenance tips for solar panels. Let’s get started!
| Component | Maintenance typically required | Typical frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Solar panels | Cleaning, checking for cracks, hot spots, dirt, shading, or physical damage | 1–2× per year / as needed |
| Inverter | Check for faults, ventilation, overheating, and error codes; firmware may need updating | Annually |
| Mounting/racking system | Check bolts, rails, brackets, corrosion, and structural integrity | Annually |
| Electrical cables & connectors | Inspect for loose connections, UV damage, corrosion, or rodent damage | Annually |
| DC/AC isolators | Check operation, enclosure condition, and signs of overheating | Annually |
| Circuit breakers/fuses | Inspect for faults, overheating, or deterioration | During electrical inspection |
| Battery storage (if fitted) | Check battery condition, temperature, connections, software, and capacity/health | Usually annually |
| Monitoring system | Check that generation data and communications are working correctly | Regularly/continuously |
| Earthing/lightning protection | Inspect connections and protection equipment | Periodically, often annually |
| Roof penetrations/seals | Check for leaks or deterioration around mounting points | Annually |
The inverter is usually the major component with a finite service life. Depending on the type and manufacturer, it may need replacement considerably earlier than the panels themselves. Solar batteries also have a shorter expected life than PV modules.
The panels themselves generally require the least maintenance – mainly keeping them reasonably clean and checking for damage.

As previously highlighted, challenges may arise with your solar panels. If you observe any irregularities in their performance, it is crucial to promptly address the issues to prevent further deterioration.
Here are some common issues that can affect solar panels:
Defective wiring has the potential to impede the effective and efficient operation of your solar panel. Loose connections, oxidation, and corrosion can disrupt power production. Attempting to repair the wiring on your own is not advisable unless you have the necessary expertise or are a qualified electrician. It is recommended to contact a licensed electrician to conduct a thorough inspection of the solar panel.
Micro-cracks are prevalent concerns associated with solar panels that can undermine their effectiveness. These minuscule cracks are challenging to detect with the naked eye, but over time and with changing weather conditions, they may become more apparent. Several factors, including PV module production, mishandling during the shipping process, and fluctuations in temperature or weather conditions, can contribute to the development of micro-cracks. The decision to address these micro-cracks typically depends on the installation location. If the panel is on the roof, it may necessitate complete dismounting for repairs.
Hot spots represent a prevalent issue in solar panels, exerting a substantial impact on their efficiency and potentially rendering them irreparable. These spots usually occur when the solar panel becomes excessively warm, and several factors can contribute to their formation. The accumulation of dirt and debris on the panels, coupled with inadequately soldered connections resulting in low resistance in the section responsible for power generation, can contribute to the emergence of hot spots. This issue can significantly influence the performance of your solar panel and may even diminish its overall lifespan.
The occurrence of Potential Induced Degradation (PID) may arise from the voltage difference between the solar panel and the grounding. This situation results in an unstable percentage of discharged voltage within the power circuit. The PID effect has the potential to significantly diminish the performance and efficiency of the solar panel, ultimately reducing its lifespan. Seeking the services of a solar panel contractor can be beneficial in addressing this issue and stabilising the performance of your solar PV system.
Regular maintenance of your solar panels is essential, encompassing tasks such as cleaning and debris removal. In regions with continuous rainfall throughout the year, rainwater can efficiently cleanse the panels. Emphasising the significance of routine maintenance is critical due to the potential hindrance to panel performance caused by excessive dust accumulation. This issue can be mitigated through consistent care and upkeep and solar panel cleaning.
When conducting maintenance, avoid using hot water or detergents. Instead, opt for a gentle spray of water and a non-abrasive sponge to clean the solar panels.
Ensure your solar panels are working to their maximum capacity with an annual solar service.

Emphasising the importance of routine maintenance is critical due to the potential hindrance to panel performance caused by excessive dust accumulation. This highlights the significance of regular inspections conducted by qualified professionals. Personal inspections should be avoided, as rooftop activities pose inherent safety risks. Entrust the care of your solar panels to experienced solar engineers for effective and secure maintenance.
Swiftly attend to any identified issues with your solar panel by promptly scheduling necessary repairs. This proactive approach not only prevents the problem from escalating but can also lead to cost savings compared to waiting for severe damage to occur. Make sure to enlist the services of a qualified solar panel contractor for the needed repairs.
If you observe birds congregating on your roof, it is recommended to explore solar bird proofing solutions to deter them from nesting beneath your solar panels. This proactive measure can contribute to sustaining the efficient operation of the panels and mitigating potential health risks associated with diseases and parasites carried by birds.
